Football and current events blog

Football and current events blog

Last night England's first friendly since the announcement of the world cup squad took place. Albeit a so called 'B' international it actually proved to be one of the most useful in comparison to some of Sven's other friendly matches.

Pre -match the name on everyones lips was Theo Walcott......despite having not played one minute of Arsenals premiership campaign...and the fact not many people outside Southhampton have even seen him play made it even more surprsing that he got a standing ovation as he came on the pitch. Though was undoubtedly the result of hype of epic proportions ( think back to the situation when Rooney was given his first competitive game against Turkey at the stadium of Light).

By the end of the evening their seemed to be a new boy on the block....Aaron Lennon. Just like the emergence of Wayne Rooney he put in a fierce commanding performance down the wings tormenting the Belarus left back constantly with his rampaging runs, twists and turns (poor Shaun Wright Philips).

It would have been nice to see more of Walcott but he still showed some glimpses of what he could do given more time and space...at the end of the match one of the commentators mentioned it being the "Theo Walcott Story"....while it was hardly an epic this chapter belonged to Aaron Lennon.....cue puns such as Lennon on song and Lennon hits the right notes....from the days newspapers!!
